Shelter from the Storm

Video

This work was created during the height of the war with Iran. I started drawing quick studies of my sheltering neighbors and random strangers who joined us. I hung them like a little gallery of shelter drawings, or, says my friend and former Jerusalem Post colleague, Liat Collins, Shelties. They were hung briefly and became background to our lives. From the first War within the War, June 2025.

Anonymous Jerusalemites, September 2025

Video

This is a work of still photography that works as a slide show. It was exhibited at the Social Space Gallery in the exhibit A Reason to Get Up in the Morning, which took place at the former President’s Hotel in 2025.

It includes 15 street photography images which were taken between 2000 and 2025.

Examples of Street Photography

Ages of Woman

Digital Photograph

Ages of Woman was created during the Covid-19 Pandemic. This photo, going from Left to Right, shows shoppers in the Machaneh Yehudah Market of Jerusalem. First we see the most senior of them with uncovered gray hair, followed by a younger woman, then two children with their religious mother, who is pushing a stroller with an unseen baby.

The faceless models behind them and the large face by artist Solomon Souza further fill out the scene of being observed.

Talker and Wide Stride, 2010

Digital Photograph

Just before the renovations on Street of the Propehts, (HaNeviim Street), we see the perfectly framed walker in deep concentration.

Fantasy and Reality

Digital Photograph

Fantasy and Reality, exhibited in the double gallery tribute exhibit Simla/Smala, or Dress and Her Symbol, Return to Antea, from 2019, curated by Rita Mendes-Flohr and Naomi Tannhauser, former curators of the Antea Gallery. 1980.

Outdoor Menora

Digital Photograph

Outdoor Menora in Nachlaot comprised of individual oil lamps, the eighth and final night of Chanukkah. 2017.

Woman With a Nargila, the Old City, Jerusalem in 2010.

Digital Photograph

There is nothing more magical than the Old City and its residents when they are found in their element, in their natural surroundings, and perfectly framed by the daylight that gives all a golden glow.

Kapara and Soldier

Digital Photograph

Kapara and Soldier at the Jaffa Gate, just during the 10 days of judgement before Yom Kippur. This took place during 2014 when the religious soldier stops to perform the atonement ritual of waving a live chicken over his head while promising to give tzedaka (charity) as an exchange of one life for the other. 2014.

Robed Walker in Nachlaot

Digital Photograph

Robed Walker in Nachlaot, taken in 2020. The man walks as if he is in his natural surroundings, yet the modern motorcycle parked at the bottom of Givon Street belies that option.

Danger, fire zone

Digital Photograph

This photograph is the last of a series of images, taken in 2013, when the graffiti image started with a single line, that common decency precedes the Torah, which was added to over weeks and continued the conversation with the next line that without the Torah, there is no common decency. These apparent strangers ended the conversation with the declaration of “Danger Live Fire.”

Caesar to Caesaria

Digital Photograph

This image taken in 2017, is an image of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that the Caesar goes to Casearia, where his second and unofficial home is.

As we are approaching yet another round of elections with a lot at stake for his ruling coalition as well as the opposition parties and the entire Middle East, as we again wait to see whether this admonition will be fulfilled.

Yearning Visitors, 2026

Digital Photograph

Standing at the overlook of the Old City, with one’s back to the Mount of Olives Hotel, one sees this family of visitors and can feel their excitement as they are enthralled with the scene before them.
